چکیده

The problem of formalising continuous change within reasoning about action systems such as the situation calculus has recently been receiving increasing attention ((Rei96], MS96]). In this paper we show that a long-existing systems theoretic reasoning methodology, that of Zeigler's DEVS (discrete event system speciication), not only subsumes the standard situation calculus but is able to elegantly describe continuous change within a discrete description structure. We demonstrate that on the semantic level both Reiter's recent formalisation of continuous change within the situation calculus, and Miller and Shana-han's formalisation of continuous change within the event calculus t neatly into a DEVS framework. Our results not only evince a signii-cant connection between logic-based action formalisms and the algebraic formalism of systems theory, and between reasoning about action and discrete event simulation, but also provides support for using DEVS|a well-studied and rigorously implemented framework|as an underlying semantic framework for reasoning about action formalisms.

Overcoming the disadvantages of equidistant discretization of continuous actions, we introduce an approach that separates time into slices of varying length bordered by certain events. Such events are points in time at which the equations describing the system's behavior|i.e., the equations which specify the ongoing processes| change. Between two events the system's parameters stay continuous. ...

Overcoming the disadvantages of equidistant discretization of continuous actions, we introduce an approach that separates time into slices of varying length bordered by certain events. Such events are points in time at which the equations describing the system’s behavior—that is, the equations which specify the ongoing processes—change. The Effect of Bayesian Reasoning Training on the Results of Clinical Reasoning Tests of Interns

Introduction: Clinical reasoning includes a range of thinking about clinical medicine at all stages of patient evaluation. Bayesian theory can be used to refute or confirm differential diagnoses in the clinical reasoning process. In this way, by learning the basic mathematical language of probability in medicine, we can change our beliefs according to new evidence. The aim of this study is to i...

A Case Study in Reasoning about Processes

In this paper, we give a case study to show how a high level semantics of processes can be integrated with the event calculus to reason about complex, continuous processes. We present a formal method to specify the semantics of processes in the event calculus and implement the automated reasoning about processes and continuous change in the logical programming framework. Key-words: Reasoning, P...

Relating Formalizations of Actions

Reasoning about action is central to much of intelligent behavior. Much of the reasoning that is needed consists not of reasoning about long or complicated sets of actions, but of thinking of a problem at various different levels of abstraction. Problems that in one representation seem enormous can be reduced to a simple exercise in a more suitable representation. A transformation that is espec...
